Adam Downs MA, PhD Intern - Group & Family Therapist
Adam Downs graduated Magna Cum Laude from Texas Tech University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Development and Family Studies. His area of specialization was Substance Abuse Studies and he was a scholarship recipient from the Center for the Study of Addiction and Recovery. Downs received his master’s degree from Michigan State University with a major in Marriage and Family Therapy. Currently he is a fifth year Phd student at MSU and doing his internship at Solutions Atlanta.
Downs was a research assistant to Dr. Richard Wampler from 2006 - 2010 and has a number publications in academic journals in the area of addiction studies and juvenile delinquency. His research has been presented at professional conferences across the country. In 2009 he was invited to lead a workshop on the treatment of substance abuse and dependence using Experiential Therapy at the annual conference for the Michigan Association of Marriage and Family Therapy. He is a member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) and the Georgia Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (GAMFT)
His research interests include the transition from juvenile delinquency to adult delinquency, substance abuse/dependency among adolescent populations, parent and peer attachment styles among high risk youth populations, and parental and adolescent relationships in addicted families.
Downs has clinical interest in and specialized training in Evidence Based programs such as Core and Couple Communication, Parent Management Training the Oregon Model, and Emotional Focused Family Therapy. He pulls from both his training and his own personal experiences of being a recovering addict to relate to his clients both in Solutions Atlanta Outpatient Program and in his own private practice located here in the same building in Roswell, GA.
